Soryun Ahn

Soryun Ahn is a London-based, South Korean artist, who has graduated her Masters of Arts degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art, 2024. She holds an MA from Korea National University of Arts, 2020, and a B.A. from Hongik University in Seoul, 2011..

Ahn’s work delves into the fluid intersections of ancient myths and personal imagination, creating new narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Her paintings capture moments where the collective dreams of the past overlap with intimate, autobiographical stories, often surfacing in the form of half-human, half-animal creatures, angels, or ghosts. These enigmatic figures, deeply symbolic, emerge in landscapes that combine contemporary everyday scenes with the mythological past, struggling to define their existence through actions like wandering, staring, or howling.

Ahn works primarily with paint, focusing on brushstrokes that blur the lines between representation and abstraction, reality and non-reality. Her technique reveals a continuous exploration of marks that create a new visual language—one that invites viewers into a world of ironies, mysteries, and the subtle presence of death, all set against the backdrop of daily life.

Her childhood fascination with narrative, alongside a profound connection to inner worlds, fuels her exploration of what lies beyond the visible. These themes resonate through her work, crafting layered stories that invite viewers to ponder their own perceptions of reality and imagination.

Ahn’s paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across London and Seoul, including recent shows such as 'A Night Walk' at Sahng-up Gallery in Seoul, 2023, and 'LAWLESS IMAGINATION' at RuptureXIBIT in London, 2023.
